Governor Jan Brewer has previously supported the expansion of gun rights in Arizona. Apparently, however, she didn't feel right approving a new measure that would further expand such firearm freedoms.
We have written posts before about the now-vetoed Arizona legislative proposal. Senate Bill 1467 sought to allow guns on public college campuses. Advocates for the bill argue that that expansion of freedom would keep people safer on school campuses.
According to reports, Brewer isn't completely opposed to the concept of allowing people the right to bear arms on Arizona school campuses. She states that the reason she put a stop to SB 1467 is because the legislation wasn't written clearly enough.
Especially with gun laws, it's important for the legislation to be clear to understand. Brewer suggests that if gun laws are written ineffectively, Arizonans won't be clear on their rights and, therefore, violate the law without even knowing it. Then, gun control advocates would use such incidents as a reason to limit gun rights throughout Arizona.
If Brewer's history of passing other Arizona gun legislation tells us anything, it wouldn't be surprising if she were to approve a similar proposal down the road. She approved the law that permits certain Arizonans without a conceal and carry permit to carry concealed firearms, for example.
For something like SB 1467 to be passed in the future, the legislation would just need to be clearer regarding where guns could be carried in regards to public campuses. On a campus, what areas are considered "public right of way?"
There are other gun law proposals on the table, and we will let you know when there are updates about those bills.
